One of my favorite classes during my academic journey has been the Design Thinking course I took in my second semester. This class stands out because it revolutionized the way I approach problem-solving and creativity. Design Thinking is essentially a course that teaches the fundamentals of brainstorming and collaborative ideation. In every class, we were divided into groups, fostering a collaborative environment where diverse ideas could flourish. Each session began with our professor introducing a new topic or concept. This dynamic approach kept the course engaging and allowed us to explore a variety of subjects. We were encouraged to discuss these topics within our groups, and then visually represent our thoughts through drawings or written notes. This method not only helped us articulate our ideas clearly but also facilitated a deeper understanding through visualization. The concepts and methods we learned were not isolated exercises; instead, they were integral to our final project. Throughout the semester, we accumulated a wealth of knowledge and techniques that we would later combine for a comprehensive final report. For this report, we were required to visit a physical location, analyze it thoroughly, and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The practical aspect of being on-site added a tangible dimension to our learning experience, as we had to observe and evaluate real-world scenarios. The final step involved proposing improvements for the location based on our analysis. This task was not just about identifying flaws but also about envisioning solutions and enhancements. It challenged us to apply our collective knowledge creatively and practically. The hands-on experience of analyzing a physical space and brainstorming potential improvements was incredibly rewarding and highlighted the real-world applicability of design thinking principles. Overall, the Design Thinking course was a transformative experience. It equipped me with invaluable skills in creative problem-solving, teamwork, and practical application of theoretical concepts. This course has not only been my favorite but also one of the most impactful in shaping my academic and professional outlook.(326字)

Unfortunately, I didn’t live close to the school, which is located in Saint Lucia. I preferred to be closer to the city, so I chose to live at UniLodge South Bank. This accommodation consists of a six-bedroom apartment, which costs $399 AUD per week. The apartment is well-equipped, featuring two toilets, two showers, one kitchen, and one living room, providing a comfortable living space for its residents. Living in Brisbane has its own charm. The weather here is quite pleasant overall, though it can be described as a milder, somewhat less exciting version of Taiwan's climate. Summers in Brisbane are known for their extreme heat, often requiring air conditioning and plenty of hydration to stay comfortable. In contrast, winters are relatively mild, with temperatures typically ranging between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. This moderate winter weather is quite enjoyable, allowing for outdoor activities without the harsh cold experienced in other parts of the world. My decision to stay at UniLodge South Bank was influenced by my desire to be in closer proximity to the city's vibrant lifestyle and amenities. This location offers easy access to various city attractions, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making it an ideal choice for someone who enjoys an active urban lifestyle. Moreover, the convenience of public transportation from South Bank to the university and other parts of Brisbane adds to the appeal of living here. Despite the distance from the school, the benefits of living in UniLodge South Bank outweigh the inconveniences. The combination of a well-furnished apartment, pleasant weather, and the lively city atmosphere has made my stay in Brisbane a memorable and enjoyable experience. It has provided a perfect balance between academic commitments and personal enjoyment, enhancing my overall university experience.(285字)

As for the cultural shocks that I faced, working as a casual kitchen hand in a restaurant exposed me to a diverse range of experiences. I had the opportunity to meet people from various countries, and this interaction significantly broadened my understanding of different cultures. My coworkers and I often discussed the unique ways children are raised in different parts of the world. These conversations were fascinating and enlightening, revealing the diverse cultural practices that shape individuals from a young age. One of the most interesting aspects of these discussions was discovering that even people from the same country could have vastly different experiences growing up. This variation often stemmed from their ancestral backgrounds. For instance, two people might both be from the same country, but if their ancestors came from different regions or countries, their upbringing and the values they learned could be quite distinct. This diversity within a single nationality was something I hadn't fully appreciated before. These cultural exchanges at work allowed me to see the world through different lenses and understand the richness of human experiences. For example, some coworkers shared stories about strict educational systems, while others talked about more relaxed and creative approaches to learning. Additionally, the ways in which family traditions and societal expectations influenced their development were often topics of conversation. These interactions also highlighted the importance of being open-minded and adaptable. Learning about different cultural norms and practices helped me become more empathetic and respectful towards others' perspectives. It also made me realize that there is no single "correct" way to grow up; instead, each cultural context offers unique strengths and challenges. Overall, working with such a culturally diverse team was a profoundly enriching experience. It not only helped me overcome initial cultural shocks but also deepened my appreciation for the global community we live in. The insights gained from these interactions have been invaluable in shaping my worldview and enhancing my interpersonal skills. (323字)

I highly recommend you embrace this opportunity with an open mind and a sense of adventure. Having experienced this myself, I can offer some valuable advice to help you make the most of your time overseas. First and foremost, choose your accommodation wisely. While staying close to your university can be convenient, sometimes opting for a location closer to the city can provide a richer experience. For instance, I chose to live at UniLodge South Bank in Brisbane, even though it wasn't near my school in Saint Lucia. This allowed me to enjoy the vibrant city life, with easy access to restaurants, entertainment venues, and public transportation. Working part-time can be an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet people from diverse backgrounds. During my time abroad, I worked as a casual kitchen hand in a restaurant, where I interacted with coworkers from various countries. These interactions were incredibly enriching, offering me insights into different cultural practices and perspectives. We often discussed how children are raised differently around the world, which broadened my understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. Be prepared for cultural shocks, but view them as learning opportunities. Engaging with people from different backgrounds will expose you to new ideas and ways of thinking. For example, I found it fascinating to learn that even within the same country, people can have different upbringings based on their ancestral backgrounds. This experience taught me the importance of being open-minded and adaptable. Lastly, embrace the local weather and lifestyle. Brisbane's climate, for instance, is quite mild, with hot summers and pleasant winters. Take advantage of this by exploring outdoor activities and immersing yourself in the local environment. Studying abroad is a transformative experience that will challenge and enrich you in many ways. Embrace every moment, be open to new experiences, and you will return home with a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable memories.(316字)
