(一)基本資料

I am currently studying at the University of Sunderland in England from September 27, 2023, to May 20, 2024. My courses are related to computer science, business, and tourism. (25字)

My favorite class is Tourism and Heritage Management, taught by Vickey, a young British teacher. She conducts the class through group discussions and uses well-prepared PowerPoint presentations. Compared to older teachers, Vickey's British accent is clear and easy to understand, making it an excellent opportunity for me to get accustomed to the British accent. This is particularly valuable because Sunderland, a rural community school in England, has more foreign students than local ones, making it challenging to practice the British accent in daily life. Vickey's clear accent significantly enhances my learning experience. During class, after discussing with team members, we share our insights with Vickey, who provides immediate suggestions and feedback. This interactive approach has helped me learn a lot. Additionally, Vickey's course includes at least three field trips within Sunderland each semester. Although the places we visit are not large, they are rich in history and culture. During these field trips, Vickey invites professional speakers to give tours, making these experiences rare and impressive, especially for students in the Department of Information Technology. One of the most memorable trips was to the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. Despite its modest size, the museum is packed with fascinating exhibits that showcase the region's industrial heritage and natural history. The Winter Gardens, with its lush tropical plants and serene environment, provided a perfect contrast to the museum's historical displays. Another trip took us to the Hylton Castle, where we learned about the castle's role in local history from an expert historian. These trips not only enriched my understanding of Sunderland's heritage but also provided practical insights into tourism and heritage management. In conclusion, I like this class very much because of the teacher, the teaching method, and the content. The course doesn't delve into very deep knowledge but often inspires me to learn more about the world's heritage, particularly in the United Kingdom, after class. This unique blend of classroom learning and practical experiences makes Vickey's Tourism and Heritage Management class my favorite. The opportunities to engage with local history and culture firsthand have been invaluable, fueling my passion for heritage management and broadening my understanding of the subject.(358字)

Sunderland is one of the more rural and community universities in England, the student dormitories are located a long way from the city centre, but there are specific free buses available on weekdays. However, comparing with the price of dormitories in the whole UK, Sunderland's clanny house can be regarded as the cheapest one, even though it is a shared bathroom, toilet and kitchen, but there are cleaning staff coming every Sunday and included in the rent. Although Sunderland is a rural area, you can get to the big supermarkets and the city centre by bus or metro. Not all shops are in the city centre, but the main chain shops can be found in Sunderland. If you still prefer a big city, you can go shopping in Newcastle next door. If the UK is compared to Taiwan, Sunderland is as boring as Miaoli, while Newcastle can be compared to Hsinchu or Taichung. There are two campuses in Sunderland: city campus and St. Peter, most of the common subjects are taught in St Peter, while other less common or special subjects are taught in city campus. There is a river next to St. Peter, and when the weather is good, you can go for a walk along the river, which is a very comfortable place. The weather in the UK is always cloudy and sunny, and it rains almost every day. We all treasure the good weather and sunshine in the UK, and Sunderland is no surprise. In addition, because it is close to the sea and to the north, when the weather is not good, the wind is strong and the humidity is high and the temperature is low, so in the winter time, everyone in the UK does not seem to be very energetic and it gets dark at less than four o'clock in the afternoon every day, which makes it an easy season to make people feel melancholic.(353字)

(四)自我成長

In the UK, we all attach great importance to our rest and recreation. In Sunderland, the pubs are the only ones left on the streets at around 5 o'clock, no matter it's summer or winter time, so I don't go to the pubs, so I have a lot of time to read with myself. I don't have enough time in Taiwan, but I don't have that problem in the UK because it's all over early and there's a lot of time for me to talk to myself and read. I think because Taiwan is a very tolerant country, and the media is now so developed that you can learn about other cultures through the internet, I don't have much of an idea about culture shock in the UK. My own personal feeling is that I have less contact with Arab or Middle Eastern countries in Taiwan, so when I talk and work with my flatmates, it's the biggest impact on the conversations that I've had in the UK. I had the biggest impact on the dialogue I felt in the UK when I was talking to my flatmates. If I encountered any problems during the course, the teacher would ask me if I had any related questions after each section of the lecture, and I could also communicate with the teacher via email after the class, so I was able to solve the problems I encountered in the classroom and in my studies. The most problematic thing for me was the British accent, as most of the English courses that I have been exposed to since I was a child in Taiwan are taught with an American accent, and very few schools teach British English. Having lived in the UK for nearly a year, I'm no stranger to British accents now! (300字)

If you are considering an exchange program at the University of Sunderland, here are some insights and advice that might help you make the most of your experience: Sunderland is a simple and quiet place, which some might find boring. However, it offers a unique environment that can be very rewarding if you embrace it. Making friends here requires consistent socializing and effort. Participating in school-organized events, actively engaging in courses, and joining clubs or societies are excellent ways to meet people and build a social network. If you are a quieter person who values a lot of "me time," Sunderland could be an ideal place for you. The slower pace of life allows for ample personal time, which can be great for introspection, reading, or pursuing hobbies. The town’s tranquility provides a perfect setting for personal growth and relaxation. Additionally, Sunderland's proximity to Europe is a significant advantage. With cheap airfare and short travel times, it’s an excellent opportunity for those interested in exploring different European countries. Each country offers a unique cultural experience, enriching your overall stay in the UK. The weather in the UK is quite different from Taiwan. While it often rains and has a lower average temperature, the sunny days are particularly enjoyable. Unlike the hot and humid sun in Taiwan, the sunshine in the UK is comfortable and pleasant. On sunny days, you can lie on the grass in the park and enjoy the sun with others, which is a refreshing and delightful experience. In summary, Sunderland can be a rewarding destination for exchange students who are open to making efforts in socializing and who appreciate a quiet, reflective environment. The opportunity to explore Europe easily and the enjoyable weather on sunny days are additional perks that make studying in Sunderland a unique and enriching experience.(304字)
