(一)基本資料

Before going to study abroad, I was very nervous, because you did not know what will going on in the US(the places, culture, and people were unpredictable),and also we need to know many things in order to be prepared. the reason i chose Temple university was because it located near to the center of the city, which is very convenient. On the other hand, there is a china town also located near center city, as a chinese people I was very delighted. After i got there, i was totally fine, due to i feeling comfortable living there, the places are very big and beautiful, full of historic places. Finally, the class there was great, because all the teachers willing to teach us, if there are any questions they encourage us to ask them. Also the environment of the university is great, it is very clean and big. the atmosphere was wonderful !(153字)

I have English classes because I did not achieve a good score on the IELTS exam. As a result, it is necessary for me to enroll in the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Temple University. This program is structured into three main parts: Integrated English (which includes listening and speaking), Writing, and Reading. Each class typically has around 8 to 15 students, which allows for more personalized attention from the instructors. One of the great aspects of this program is the diversity of the students. My classmates come from various countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Ecuador, Vietnam, China, and many others. This international mix makes the classes very interesting, and I have made many friends from different parts of the world. The students are very friendly, and I have learned a lot from them, including some basic phrases in Arabic and Spanish. This cultural exchange is one of the highlights of my experience. The teachers at Temple University are also very thoughtful and dedicated. They are always willing to teach us everything we need to know to improve our English skills. They use various teaching methods to keep us engaged. For example, they often incorporate games that involve using English words. These activities are very effective because they not only help us concentrate but also make learning fun. I have won many games in class, which has boosted my confidence. Overall, my experience in the Intensive English Language Program has been incredibly positive. The small class sizes, the diverse student body, and the dedicated teachers all contribute to a productive and enjoyable learning environment. I am grateful for the opportunity to improve my English in such a supportive and dynamic setting. (281字)

Temple University has multiple campuses, with three located in Philadelphia. Most students, including myself, study at the main campus. The main campus is large and well-maintained, with some buildings that are steeped in history, giving them an old and beautiful appearance. However, the area around the campus does have its downsides. One significant issue is the high crime rate. My friends and I frequently receive alerts about crimes occurring near the university, which makes the area particularly dangerous at night. Additionally, the streets around the campus are often littered with garbage, and it’s not uncommon to see rats scurrying about. Despite these challenges, there are many things I enjoy about the area. For instance, I love the halal food truck located near Fresh Grocer. The food there is very affordable compared to the average food prices in Philadelphia. For just $8, you can get a meal that will leave you feeling very full. I highly recommend it! Given that the cost of living in Philadelphia is about three times higher than in Taiwan, saving money is crucial. Many students, including myself, find ways to economize by cooking at home and avoiding unnecessary purchases. Regarding housing, my apartment rental costs $560 per month, which is the cheapest among all my friends. The apartment is well-equipped with amenities such as air conditioning, heating, a bed, a television, and security features, making it a comfortable place to live for both me and my roommate. Lastly, the weather in Philadelphia is quite different from what I’m used to in Taiwan. Summers are very hot, while winters are extremely cold. The coldest temperature I have experienced here is minus five degrees, so it's essential to buy gloves and other warm clothing to stay comfortable during the winter months. Overall, while there are some challenges, my experience at Temple University has been enriching and memorable.(309字)

This is my first time visiting the United States of America, and I am both excited and nervous. I love the culture and the many beautiful places here, but I am also aware that it can be unpredictable and sometimes dangerous. Despite these concerns, I quickly adapted and felt much more at ease. One of the key things I learned is the importance of asking questions when in doubt. People here are generally very helpful, and you shouldn't be afraid to reach out for assistance—it's easier than you might think. Having a positive mindset is crucial in overcoming difficulties. The teachers at Temple University are always willing to help, which makes a significant difference when facing challenges. Additionally, having friends from my home country has been invaluable. We do everything together, from exploring the city to splitting expenses to make things more affordable. This camaraderie provides a sense of comfort and security, making it easier to navigate life in a new country. As for managing culture shock, I must say that I haven't experienced much of it. This is largely because I did my homework before coming to the United States. I researched the places, customs, and environment to prepare myself for what to expect. This preparation helped me feel more confident and less overwhelmed by the new surroundings. In terms of everyday life, I encountered some initial challenges but found ways to overcome them. For example, I was initially intimidated by the language barrier and the different accents. However, by engaging in conversations and participating actively in my English classes, I gradually improved my listening and speaking skills. The diverse student body in the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) also helped me get used to various accents and dialects. Moreover, the learning environment at Temple University is very supportive. The teachers use interactive methods, such as games and group activities, which not only make learning fun but also help us bond with classmates from different cultural backgrounds. This interaction has broadened my perspective and enhanced my understanding of various cultures. Financial management is another area where I had to adapt. The cost of living in Philadelphia is significantly higher than in Taiwan, so I learned to budget carefully. Cooking at home, avoiding unnecessary purchases, and finding affordable dining options like the halal food truck near Fresh Grocer have all helped me manage my expenses effectively. The weather was another adjustment. Philadelphia's summers are very hot, and the winters are much colder than what I am used to in Taiwan. Experiencing temperatures as low as minus five degrees was a shock, but I prepared by buying appropriate winter clothing, including gloves and a warm coat. Overall, my experience in the United States has been a mix of challenges and rewarding moments. By staying positive, seeking help when needed, and preparing myself in advance, I have managed to navigate the cultural and practical challenges of living and studying in a new country.(492字)

Before going abroad, I had a lot of apprehensions. I felt that one year was too long to be away from home. However, after spending a year in the United States, I realized how quickly time flies, especially during the second semester. Here are some important pieces of advice for students who are preparing to go abroad. Firstly, thorough preparation is crucial. Familiarize yourself with your surroundings, research the area, and find a suitable apartment before you arrive. Make a checklist of all the essential items you need to bring, and don't be afraid to ask for help or information to boost your confidence. Proper preparation can alleviate much of the anxiety associated with moving to a new country. Upon arrival, prioritize completing all necessary administrative tasks as soon as possible. This includes opening a bank account, setting up internet services, and visiting the school office to take care of payments and other formalities. Taking care of these essentials early on allows you to relax and enjoy your new environment before classes begin. Cooking your own meals is another essential tip. It is a great way to save money, especially in cities where the cost of living is high. Explore local markets and grocery stores to find affordable ingredients. Not only is cooking at home cost-effective, but it also allows you to maintain a healthy diet and experiment with new recipes. Safety is another important consideration, particularly for female students. Avoid going out alone at night and always be aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and consider using a buddy system when exploring unfamiliar places. It's important to stay cautious and prioritize your personal safety. In addition, building a support network is invaluable. Connect with other international students and join student organizations or clubs. Having friends from your home country and from other cultures can provide emotional support and make your experience more enriching. They can offer advice, share experiences, and help you feel less isolated. Lastly, maintain a positive mindset. Studying abroad can be challenging, but it is also a unique opportunity for personal growth and learning. Embrace the new experiences, be open to different cultures, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Remember that everyone goes through an adjustment period, and it’s perfectly normal to feel homesick or overwhelmed at times. In conclusion, studying abroad is a transformative experience. By preparing well, managing your finances, staying safe, and building a support network, you can make the most of your time abroad. The year will go by faster than you expect, and the memories and experiences you gain will be invaluable.(442字)
