My favorite course during my exchange program was Introduction to Screenwriting. It was taught by Tutor Laura, who was incredibly supportive, especially since she knew I was an international exchange student. She offered extra guidance and valuable suggestions throughout the semester, which made me feel welcomed and motivated. I was a little bit frustrated at the beginning because I’ve never taken any film-related course and have no background knowledge, but with Laura’s help, I felt much better later on. This course introduced me to many essential screenwriting skills. For instance, I learned how to start a script with "Fade In" and understood the basic structure of screenwriting, such as formatting, scene descriptions, and dialogue. Additionally, I discovered a new app for scriptwriting that was incredibly user-friendly, making every detail clear and easy to read. One of the most exciting parts of the course was character development. Tutor Laura encouraged us to create an original character and use it as the foundation for a short story, which would later be turned into a short film. It was an engaging and creative process that required teamwork and collaboration. I was thrilled when my teammates chose the character I developed for our group project. Together, we created a short film: I wrote the script, Adien edited the video, and Jack provided the voice narration. Our collaboration was seamless, and we each played to our strengths to produce a cohesive and compelling final project. Seeing our ideas come to life on screen was incredibly rewarding. This experience not only improved my screenwriting skills but also taught me the importance of teamwork in the creative process. The friendships I made and the skills I gained in this course are unforgettable. I truly enjoyed every moment of it and highly recommend it to anyone interested in film or screenwriting. 306 (305字)

QUT does not provide dormitories, but there are many private student accommodations in Brisbane City, such as Student One and Scape. However, these are much more expensive compared to renting a place outside. I think it’s a good idea to stay in a student accommodation for the first few months since you're unfamiliar with the area and might not have time to inspect houses in person. Later, you can take your time to find a more affordable place. One benefit of student accommodations is that they often host free events where you can meet people from around the world and expand your social circle. In the second half of my stay, I found a studio room for rent by a Taiwanese couple through a Facebook group. It was much cheaper and conveniently located near my school. Brisbane city is generally as safe as Taipei, so it’s not a big issue for a girl to be outside at night. I also didn’t encounter any discrimination. However, you should be cautious of local teenagers, as they are well-protected by the law and sometimes try to provoke others. The weather in Brisbane is pleasant all year round, but the temperature difference between mornings and evenings can be large in winter, so be prepared for that. Eating out is very expensive—about 500 TWD per meal—so I recommend cooking at home to save money. Local supermarkets have everything you need, and you can use the savings for traveling! There are many beautiful cities in Australia worth you to give them a look. (261字)

(四)自我成長

When the excitement and thrill of a new life fade away, what often follows is a sense of loneliness. It’s not the loneliness of being alone but the emptiness of being in a crowd without truly connecting. It’s the helplessness of struggling to understand in a different cultural and language environment. It’s the unfamiliarity of walking on busy streets where the scenery is no longer neon lights and familiar signs. I wondered why I felt this way—why, since leaving home at 18, I’ve never experienced such a strong sense of homesickness. In this seemingly busy yet calm city, I try to find my place and fit into the culture without standing out too much. Sometimes, I crave recognition and connection, things that take a lot of effort to achieve, but even a small success feels deeply satisfying. This place doesn’t care where you’re from or where you’re going. Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to this passionate paradise. I enjoy observing the easygoing lives of Australians as I walk the streets. I watch, listen, think, and speak, letting these experiences nourish me, waiting for the day my efforts bloom into something beautiful. I drifted alone to this land, and when I saw driftwood on the sea, I instinctively wanted to cling to it. But often, it either sank or supported me only briefly. That’s the most toxic part of loneliness. Stepping into the unknown changes your perspective; it sharpens and blurs your sense of self. After being away, I realized that only home gives unconditional love. There are many reasons to love Australia, but none of them can replace the warmth of home. Yet, I’m not far from my anxieties. In this vast world, with people coming and going, I wander aimlessly, stopping here and there. What I can take with me or leave behind doesn’t matter anymore. Loneliness, in fact, can be interesting. Over time, I’ve learned to face it, having conversations in my mind with those unsettling emotions. Lost in translation: "The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you." (364字)

First of all, I recommend that everyone research the courses they want to take carefully before going abroad. Once you submit the application form, or what they call a "wishlist," to QUT, it will be quite difficult to change your course selection later. Also, make sure to check if all credits can be transferred back to Tamkang University, either within your major or as electives. It’s better to confirm this early to avoid any issues later. Secondly, it’s a good idea to save some money before going abroad, as living expenses in Australia are quite high. If you want to have more fun and explore, setting aside some extra funds for entertainment will be very helpful. Additionally, bring some of the medicines you’re used to taking in Taiwan. When I first arrived, I experienced some health issues due to adjusting to the environment and found that I often took a long time to recover. Having familiar medicines on hand can be a lifesaver. Third, some of my friends worked part-time jobs locally to earn extra money for living expenses. However, this might take away from your leisure and travel time. In my opinion, money can always be earned later, so I focused on traveling and exploring different places during my year abroad. That said, this is a personal choice, and there’s no right or wrong. Lastly, make good use of your time abroad. Embrace different cultures, step out of your comfort zone, and make friends from various countries to exchange cultural experiences. Attend local events, try new activities, and immerse yourself in the culture. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so enjoy it to the fullest and make memories that will last forever! (286字)
