(一)基本資料

The college that I applied for my study abroad was the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM), located in Adelaide, South Australia. My study-abroad period started in July 2023 and ended in July 2024. In ICHM, the course criteria were to participate in 4 courses ranging from on-campus lessons to industry practices, such as housekeeping, bar mixology, fine dining services and industry training. Alongside this, I also signed up for a culinary course for elective learning. (73字)

The course I enjoyed the most at ICHM was BBHM102. It was a fantastic blend of learning food and beverage standards, operating a fine dining restaurant, and mastering drink-making. Our professor, Niels, was from the Netherlands, and he was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly approachable and helpful. His teaching style made the course both engaging and insightful. Throughout the course, we went through a series of practical training sessions that prepared us for the industry. One of the most valuable lessons was learning the sequence of services, which we would use daily during our placement as F&B attendants. Niels made sure we mastered the essentials, from the precise placement of cutlery to the accuracy of the service sequence. He also emphasized the importance of having a strong, clear presence, teamwork, and being detail-oriented in everything we do. In addition to the technical aspects, Niels also introduced us to wine and liquor knowledge. This is where bar mixology became one of my favourite parts of the course. I learned about diverse types and brands of liquor, from Johnnie Walker Whisky to Bombay Gin, and Niels even taught us the art of shaker movements and how to decorate drinks to make them more visually appealing. It was a lot of fun, and I felt like I was gaining skills that were not only practical but also creative. I highly recommend Niels’ classes because he always shares something you didn’t even know you needed to know. His insights and expertise have made me feel more confident and capable as an all-rounder in the F&B industry.(266字)

(三)生活環境

The campus of ICHM is located near the heart of Adelaide's central business district. Just a 10-minute walk to the CBD area, and a 5-minute walk to any restaurants within the distance. Previously, the campus was located in the suburb which they recently moved to the city. The new building of ICHM is painted in white, with their logo emphasised in red hanging on the top. It is a small campus containing only a corner of the block, roughly six classrooms and ten meeting rooms, along with a common area for reading, dining, and entertainment. School facilities are nice, for the entertainment area the school purchased a ping pong table, encouraging us to exercise while off class, and a lot of sports equipment for us to borrow to the square plaza just across the road to play some ball games. Other than that, it also has a PlayStation for video game lovers. On the other hand, accommodations are squeaky clean, spacious, and a place to meet new pals. However, the types of accommodation vary as we get to choose different room types we appeal to and different locations. The accommodation offers plenty of activities and tours. Providing all facilities, including a theatre, rooftop, gaming area, and pool table. The weather in Adelaide is incredibly fine, with blue skies and sunshine almost every day. Despite that, when it rains, it'll be pouring. (231字)

Moving to Adelaide to study at ICHM has been an exciting yet challenging experience. Adjusting to a new culture and academic environment wasn’t easy at first. I found it tricky to get used to the relaxed yet direct nature of Australian communication, and understanding Australian slang was a whole new adventure! On top of that, I’d often find myself missing home, which added to the culture shock. What helped was keeping an open mind and staying proactive. Joining student groups and getting involved in campus activities turned out to be a fantastic way to meet people and feel more at home. In class, I started asking more questions, even when I felt a bit shy. It helped me learn better and made me more confident. I quickly realized that no question is ever too small—most of the time, others were wondering the same thing, and my professors were always happy to help. Opening to others also made a significant difference. When I shared my experiences, I discovered that so many of my classmates were going through the same things. Talking about it brought us closer, and it’s comforting to know you're not alone. Over time, those initial struggles began to feel less daunting. Looking back, I can see how much I’ve grown. The challenges I faced taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. Studying abroad has been more than just an education—it’s been a life-changing journey.(250字)

Stepping out of your comfort zone is something I’d strongly encourage. It might feel intimidating at first, but staying open-hearted with a curious mind is key to making the most of your experience. Be open to challenges and embrace them as opportunities to explore and grow, instead of worrying about what could go wrong. Being abroad was perhaps the best time of my life, filled with countless learning experiences, personal growth, and unforgettable memories. The journey may seem daunting at first, but every challenge is truly a chance to grow. Be proactive—don’t hesitate to ask questions in class, reach out for help if you need it, and seize the chance to build friendships with classmates from all over the world. These connections often lead to lifelong friendships and valuable cultural exchanges. Immerse yourself in the local culture as much as you can. Try new things, taste the local food, participate in community events, and explore the city you’re in. Respecting and understanding different perspectives will expand your worldview in ways you never imagined. While your studies are important, don’t forget to prioritize your mental and physical health. Stay organized with your coursework, but also take time to relax, exercise, and reflect on your journey. This is your chance to shape your future in a way that aligns with your dreams and aspirations. Always keep in mind there are so many opportunities awaiting.(237字)
