(一)基本資料

I am studying at the International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) in Sydney. My study abroad period is from the end of August 2023 to mid-August 2024. I took four courses at school. The first course is Bar & Mixology, where we learn how to make cocktails. The instructor provided recipes and demonstrated the cocktail-making process. For the exam, the instructor randomly selected cocktails for us to prepare on the spot. The second course is Gastronomy, which introduces various cuisines from around the world. We learn about food-related knowledge, including origins, local specialties, preparation methods, and historical culture. The instructor also took us to visit a Middle Eastern restaurant where we tasted specialties such as quail dishes and lard-based ice cream. The third course is Service & Experience Management, which explores the experiences provided by different industries, including retail shopping, restaurants, and leisure activities. We discuss brand promotion and design, target audiences, and the quality of services offered. The fourth course is Introduction to Tourism, Hospitality, and Events. In this course, the instructor gave us a topic and asked us to design a related event. The design included elements such as timing, budget, venue, and invited sponsors. We also needed to explain the purpose of each sub-activity.(203字)

My favorite class is Bar & Mixology. I am very happy to have the opportunity to learn how to make cocktails at school. The instructor taught us how to make 10 different cocktails. The instructor professionally followed the recipes and made each cocktail for us. During the demonstrations, he carefully introduced the name and taste of each drink. From preparing the ingredients to serving the guests, the instructor narrated and performed the entire process professionally. The cocktail that left the deepest impression on me was the Frozen Margarita because it required the use of a blender to crush the ice into a slushy consistency. This was the most distinct part compared to other cocktails, as most just required mixing all the ingredients. Another particularly interesting cocktail was the B-52, which uses the different densities of three types of alcohol to create its layers. Although it only requires pouring the three alcohols into a glass, achieving the layered effect requires carefully pouring the liquids over a spoon along the edge to avoid mixing them. The instructor also let us taste all the cocktails. My favorite was the Mojito because I love the taste of lemon. It also includes soda water, making it taste like a lemon soda. For me, it was the smoothest cocktail among those we tried. For our exam, we had to treat the instructor as a guest, serve them, and take their order. We needed to memorize the cocktail recipes beforehand and then make the cocktails ourselves. During the preparation, we also had to chat with the guest and share two fun facts. In Australia, if you want to work in an industry that provides alcohol to customers, you need to obtain a certification called the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). The school invited external instructors to help us complete the RSA exam and provided detailed explanations of the important points to ensure we successfully obtained the RSA. This certification is very important because most hotels or restaurants require proof of RSA certification before they will hire you.(338字)

The school is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Sydney. You need to take a bus down the mountain and then a ferry to get there. Since the school is on a hill, there aren’t many shops nearby, but there is a famous beach you can reach by bus. On nice days, it’s very pleasant to sit on the beach and enjoy the sun. You can see many locals relaxing at the beach on weekends. The school dormitory and classrooms are in the same building, making it very convenient to attend classes. The first and second floors are classrooms, and the third and fourth floors are dormitories. The school cafeteria is on the first floor and is an open space where students often discuss their homework outside of mealtimes. I don’t particularly like the food provided by the school cafeteria as it mainly consists of international dishes, so I, being a picky eater, eat very little. The weather in Australia can feel like all four seasons in one day. It can be very hot at noon when the sun is out, but it gets extremely cold as soon as the sun sets in the evening. The wind on the hill is very strong, so you need to wear a thick jacket if you stay outside at night. The dorms at the school are very considerate, with a heater in every room, which indicates how cold it gets at night. Shops in Australia close very early, around 5 PM, which makes evenings quite boring as there aren’t many places to go.(263字)

【照片說明:Grading criteria for assignments】

At first, I found it a bit challenging to keep up in class because I was not yet accustomed to the teacher's accent and teaching style. The teacher likes to use interactive teaching methods and often gives students time to share their thoughts during class. Many students eagerly volunteer to share their ideas, but sometimes the teacher also calls on students to answer. On several occasions, when I was chosen, I either gave very brief answers or couldn’t answer at all. After these experiences, I learned that I need to start thinking about how I would answer the question as soon as the teacher asks it. I prepare an outline or a short response to be ready if I am called upon. The grading system at the school is primarily based on reports. Before submitting each assignment, we can show it to the teacher to see which parts need improvement. Throughout this process, the teacher also teaches us how to create a complete report, including the cover page, table of contents, body, conclusion, and references, all meeting the teacher's standards to avoid unnecessary point deductions. After attending several classes and becoming familiar with each teacher's teaching style, I no longer felt so overwhelmed. People in Australia are very friendly. At school, whether you know them or not, teachers and classmates greet each other. When shopping, store employees also greet and have brief conversations with every customer. The way Australians treat everyone is really different from what I'm used to in Taiwan. (252字)

It's completely normal to feel uneasy and nervous when you first arrive in Australia. A year might seem long, but it goes by quickly. The teaching methods in Australia are quite different from those in Taiwan. Many courses involve hands-on experiences and group discussions. The classmates and teachers are great—they are very willing to help. If you take the initiative to ask questions, you will definitely gain a lot. After classes, you might feel anxious when starting to look for a job, but don’t worry. The teachers will surely help you find a great place for your internship. I really like the working environment in Australia because the salary is higher than in Taiwan, haha. Colleagues are friendly and treat each other like family, taking care of one another. If you have the chance, try to meet different people. Australia is a place where people from all over the world gather, so your circle of friends can be very diverse. Making new friends can be incredibly beneficial, and you never know—someone you meet could become a significant person in your life. There’s no need to worry too much or feel anxious. The year will pass quickly, and as it draws to an end, you'll find that it was a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. Make sure to cherish every day in Australia. Take the time to explore different places—the natural scenery abroad is truly spectacular. Going out and traveling can help you relax and avoid staying in a state of constant pressure. Don’t miss any opportunity to rest. Traveling freely in a foreign country is a rare and valuable experience. After this year, you will definitely learn how to handle many things independently. Whether it’s in terms of mentality or dealing with others, you will surely grow. Personally, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to study and intern abroad. This valuable year of experience has given me an edge over others and helped me find a path for my future(338字)
