(一)基本資料

During my third year at Tamkang University, I studied at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai from September 1 to July 8. I took courses in Food and Beverage, Professional and Personal Development, and Arabic Language.(36字)

My favorite course was Food and Beverage. This course was divided into theoretical and practical lessons. The practical lessons were further divided into two sections: one week we spent in the kitchen, and the next week we focused on learning service etiquette. I enjoyed the practical lessons the most, as they provided hands-on experience and allowed me to learn various culinary skills. In the kitchen, we learned how to prepare various dishes. One of the most exciting aspects was learning how to cook steaks, vegetables, and local foods. The process of grilling a perfect steak, sautéing vegetables to retain their flavor and nutrients, and preparing traditional dishes from the UAE was both challenging and rewarding. Additionally, the service etiquette lessons were invaluable. We were taught how to serve guests professionally, the importance of presentation, and how to handle different dining situations with grace and efficiency. These skills are essential in the hospitality industry and have greatly improved my confidence and abilities. we also learned how to prepare non-alcoholic cocktails and my favorite mocktail is pina colada. Overall, the Food and Beverage course at EAHM was a highlight of my study abroad experience. It provided a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, making the learning process both enjoyable and highly educational. This course has significantly contributed to my passion for the hospitality industry and my desire to excel in this field. The theoretical lessons were the most challenging for me. We had to learn menu engineering and perform various mathematical calculations, such as calculating costs, profits, and expenses. The final exam for this course was also the most difficult in my opinion. (274字)

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management (EAHM) offers a unique and comfortable living experience. Our accommodation consists of single rooms with separate dry and wet bathrooms, and each room is equipped with a small kitchen. Although I do not cook, I find the overall setup quite nice. we can also call the housekeeping to clean our room. The campus itself is not very large, and the buildings are quite similar in appearance, which often leads to getting lost. However, there is a cozy café on campus where we can relax and unwind. The dormitory is conveniently located near iconic landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel (JBH), Al QASR and Mina A'Salam. The surrounding area is also home to many stray cats, all of which are very cute and add a charming touch to the environment. The local climate in Dubai is extremely hot, especially during the summer months when temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in the morning and afternoon. This intense heat requires some adjustment, but the air-conditioned facilities help manage it. As for food, I found it challenging to adjust to the local cuisine, which is heavily influenced by Indian flavors and tends to be very spicy. This was a significant change from what I was used to, and I had a hard time getting accustomed to the spicy dishes. I miss the food in Taiwan so much. Despite this, the experience of living and studying in such a vibrant and dynamic city has been incredibly enriching and memorable. (256字)

As a Taiwanese student, adapting to life in Dubai and overcoming challenges in my coursework at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management required significant effort and resilience. One of the biggest challenges was the cultural shock. Dubai’s culture is very different from Taiwan’s, with its diverse population and strong influence from Arabic and Indian cultures. Learning to respect and understand these cultural differences was crucial. For instance, adjusting to the local customs and dress codes was initially challenging but eventually became an integral part of my daily routine. The climate in Dubai was another significant hurdle. The extreme heat, especially during summer, was something I had never experienced before. Managing daily activities and commuting in such high temperatures required careful planning and adaptation. I learned to schedule my outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day and to stay always hydrated. Academically, the theoretical aspects of the Food and Beverage course were particularly challenging. Learning menu engineering and performing mathematical calculations for costs, profits, and expenses were difficult. The final exam for this course was especially tough. However, through perseverance, seeking help from professors, and collaborating with classmates, I managed to overcome these challenges. Forming study groups with peers helped us tackle complex problems together, and regular consultations with our instructor’s provided clarity on difficult concepts. Another challenge was adjusting to the local cuisine, which is heavily influenced by Indian flavors and tends to be very spicy. This was a significant change from Taiwanese food. To adapt, I started exploring different restaurants and gradually grew accustomed to the new flavors. Over time, I found some local dishes that I enjoyed and learned to appreciate the diverse culinary offerings of Dubai. Overall, these experiences have not only enhanced my adaptability and problem-solving skills but also provided me with a broader perspective and deeper appreciation of different cultures. Living and studying in such a vibrant and dynamic city has been incredibly enriching and has prepared me well for future global opportunities. (332字)

To my fellow juniors preparing for your third-year study abroad and internship experience, here are some essential tips to help you make the most of this incredible opportunity. First, embrace cultural differences. Studying abroad means you will encounter various customs and traditions. Approach these with an open mind and willingness to learn. This will enrich your experience and help you adapt more quickly. Second, plan for the climate. If you are heading to a place with extreme weather conditions like Dubai, be prepared. Carry appropriate clothing, stay hydrated, and schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. Third, stay on top of your coursework. The theoretical aspects can be challenging, especially if they involve complex calculations or unfamiliar concepts. Form study groups, seek help from professors, and use online resources to stay ahead. Fourth, make the most of practical lessons. Hands-on experience is invaluable, especially in fields like hospitality. Engage actively in these sessions, ask questions, and learn as much as you can from real-world scenarios. Fifth, explore local cuisine gradually. If the local food is very different from what you're used to, start by trying mild dishes and gradually experiment with more diverse flavors. This approach will help you adapt without overwhelming your palate. Finally, enjoy the journey. Studying abroad is a unique chance to grow academically, professionally, and personally. Make friends, travel when possible, and immerse yourself in the local culture. These experiences will leave you with lasting memories and valuable skills for your future. Good luck! (250字)

(六)其他

During my study abroad period, I visited many amusement parks and water parks, which were incredibly fun. I also stayed at other hotels like Atlantis. Taking advantage of my employee discounts, I dined at many Jumeirah restaurants. Additionally, I had the chance to have dinner at the restaurant where I was interning.(52字)
