My favorite course at ICHM is BBHM103: Restaurant Service: Standards, Etiquettes & Training. Niels taught this course, which provided me with a strong foundation in essential hospitality skills, including table setup, banquet arrangement, and professional service techniques. These skills proved to be incredibly valuable during my internship at the National Wine Centre of Australia, a prestigious venue renowned for hosting large-scale events and offering premium wine-tasting experiences. One of the highlights of this course was learning practical techniques such as folding napkins into intricate shapes, mastering tray-handling skills, serving dishes in the correct sequence, pouring wine with precision, and arranging tableware with attention to detail. These skills not only enhanced my efficiency and professionalism but also prepared me to meet the high standards expected in the hospitality industry. During my internship, I applied these techniques daily, which significantly improved my confidence and ability to deliver exceptional service. I recommend the course BBHM103 because of its engaging and interactive course design. We were encouraged to form small groups, allowing us to collaborate, learn from each other, and share feedback. This team-based approach not only strengthened my practical skills but also helped me develop better communication and teamwork abilities, both of which are crucial in the hospitality industry. The course also included role-playing and hands-on activities that simulated real-world scenarios, making the learning experience both enjoyable and effective. Additionally, the course emphasizes practical applications that directly relate to industry demands. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, BBHM103 equips students with skills that are almost guaranteed to be used in their future careers. It is not just a classroom experience—it’s a professional training program that prepares students for success in the workplace. In conclusion, BBHM103 is an invaluable course for anyone pursuing a career in hospitality. It combines practical skills, professional etiquette, and interactive learning to prepare students for the challenges of the industry. I highly recommend this course, as it provides a solid foundation for success and ensures that students are ready to excel in any professional setting.(339字)

The ICHM campus is relatively small, consisting of only two floors. Unlike typical universities, its space feels more like a vocational training center. Besides standard classrooms for lectures, ICHM has a specially designed classroom resembling a restaurant. In this space, I learned about wine knowledge, cocktail mixing, wine tasting, cheese tasting, table etiquette, table setting, and techniques for serving guests. This classroom provides hands-on learning experiences where students actively participate rather than just listening to lectures. It simulates restaurant and café operations as well as bartending, allowing students to better understand business models and develop problem-solving skills for unexpected situations in the workplace. The campus is also equipped with vending machines, microwaves, hot water, simple coffee and tea supplies, snacks, a ping-pong table, board games, and other facilities. Additionally, the school offers various channels for students to voice their opinions, such as requesting new recreational facilities, providing anonymous classroom feedback, or applying for grade reviews. During my study abroad experience, I stayed at Scape Waymouth. This student accommodation organizes monthly recreational activities that help international students learn about the local culture and connect with people from different countries. Scape Waymouth also offers many rental services, such as hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, mops, and sports equipment. This service is helpful because it allows short-term international students to save on expenses. The facilities at Scape Waymouth include study areas, discussion rooms, a laundry room, a bike storage area, table tennis table, pool table and a basketball court. Although it’s located slightly farther from the city center, but there’s a supermarket nearby the Scape Waymouth. Scape Waymouth is also not far from ICHM, and the scenery during the commute is beautiful. The climate in Adelaide can feel a little bit cold during winter. Food is not an issue because Adelaide has a variety of options for food, including supermarkets, fast food, local Australian cuisine, Asian grocery stores, and international restaurants. Adelaide Shopping Centre is also a fantastic place for shopping and spending leisure time. (333字)

During the early stages of every internship, I often encountered unfamiliar vocabulary. For example, during my internship at the National Wine Centre of Australia, I wasn’t familiar with wine names at first. Although the National Wine Centre of Australia provided students with a handbook outlining important points for the job, including some information about wines, there were still many wine names I hadn’t heard of while working. When guests ordered wine, I had no idea what they were talking about. In those moments, I had to ask the guests to write down their requests, and then I would seek help from other colleagues. Later, I realized that I needed to review the menu before the banquet started to know which wines would be served that day. Moreover, looking at the menu allowed me to distinguish which wines were complimentary for guests and which ones required additional payment. With the experience from my first internship, I was better prepared to address my limited vocabulary during my second internship in housekeeping. During my housekeeping internship, I would jot down all the unfamiliar words I encountered on my phone’s notepad and look them up after work when I returned to my accommodation. Taking notes helped me quickly learn the vocabulary needed for my job and better understand the needs of the guests. Aside from the challenges during my internships, I didn’t encounter major problems in daily life. The only concern I had was about safety, as some wandering residents with mental health issues occasionally made me feel uneasy. When strange strangers approached me or made odd gestures, I kept calm and ignored them. Usually, they would leave when they saw I wasn’t responding. However, such incidents were rare, and I don’t think they affected my overall impression of Australia. The biggest cultural shock I experienced in Australia was the traffic habits. Drivers in Australia are very considerate of pedestrians. When I approached a zebra crossing, vehicles in both directions would stop about a car’s length away to let me cross. Crossing the street in Australia felt very safe. However, because of the audible crossing signals in Australia, I often didn’t notice the green light when I returned to Taiwan. Another adjustment was the right-hand drive system in Australia, which meant the direction of oncoming traffic was opposite to that in Taiwan. Additionally, I had to remind myself to stand on the left side when using escalators. (411字)

I would recommend juniors to thoroughly research the courses and internship opportunities offered by each school before making their decision. It is crucial to ensure that the school aligns with their academic and career goals. From my personal experience, I didn‘t realize that an internship was integrated into the curriculum during the first six months. This lack of awareness created challenges during my first internship. The supervisors at the internship site did not take our working hours seriously, nor were they familiar with the details and objectives of our internship. This showed a clear lack of communication between the school and the partnering companies. Additionally, students were unaware that the first internship was unpaid, which caused some dissatisfaction. While the school bears the responsibility for improving transparency in course content and internship arrangements, I strongly advise juniors to take the initiative to confirm whether the academic and internship plans at their chosen school meet their expectations and career needs. Another piece of advice I would strongly recommend is to make the most of your free time to explore different places whenever possible. During my time in Australia, I took the opportunity to live in and visit various locations for extended periods. Each place had its own unique culture, vibe, and atmosphere, which greatly enriched my overall experience. For example, the lifestyle in big cities felt fast-paced and multicultural, while smaller towns offered a more relaxed and close-knit community vibe. Experiencing these differences helped me better understand what kind of environment suits me best. Since you’re already abroad, take this golden opportunity to explore and make the most of your experience. You never know what you might discover about yourself or the world around you. (286字)
