William Angliss Institue MEL 2023-07-24~2024-07-24 Over the past year, I have had the honour of spending an unforgettable time studying in Melbourne, Australia. The city of Melbourne is known for its multiculturalism, beautiful natural environment and friendly residents, all of which have left a deep impression on me. When I first arrived in Melbourne, I was both excited and nervous about the new environment. Being separated from my family and friends was a challenge, but Melbourne's warmth and acceptance soon made me feel at home. Whether it was my classmates at school or strangers on the street, they were always willing to help, which helped me adapt to life here quickly. In terms of academics, the Australian education system is very different from ours. The curriculum is more flexible and emphasises students' independent learning and practical skills. The professors encourage us to actively participate in class discussions and put forward our own opinions, which has greatly enhanced my critical thinking skills. I have taken several courses of my own interest, such as Environmental Science and Cultural Studies, which have not only broadened my knowledge, but also developed my ability to think and solve problems independently. In addition to my studies, I have benefited from Melbourne's colourful extracurricular activities. The school offers a wide range of societies and clubs, from sports and arts to volunteering. I joined the school's photography club and volunteer organisation, which not only allowed me to meet people from all over the world, but also improved my photography skills and social skills. Volunteering has also given me the opportunity to get to know the local community and experience the clash of different cultures. I was also fascinated by Melbourne's natural environment. Melbourne's natural environment also fascinates me, with its magnificent beaches, enchanting forests and abundant wildlife. In my spare time, I often go on picnics, hiking or surfing with my friends, which not only relaxes me, but also makes me love nature even more. Melbourne's excellent transport links and infrastructure make my daily life easier. The public transport system is well connected, so I can get to all corners of the city easily. Supermarkets, restaurants, libraries and other facilities are all available to support my study and life. Melbourne is also known for its rich food culture, where food from all over the world is available for me to enjoy. During this year, I have not only learnt a wealth of knowledge and improved my abilities, but I have also made many like-minded friends and gained countless precious memories. Although my study abroad life is full of challenges, it is these challenges that make me grow up and become stronger and more independent. All in all, this year's study abroad experience has benefited me greatly, not only broadening my horizons and enhancing my adaptability, but also giving me confidence in my future. I am confident that this experience will become a valuable lesson in my life and lay a solid foundation for my future development.

Attending the kitchen course was a very interesting and challenging experience for me. From basic knife skills to complex dishes, each step requires care and patience. The course not only taught me a wide range of cooking skills, but also improved my creativity and time management. During the course, I especially enjoyed learning how to prepare various international cuisines. I always feel a sense of achievement when I see the delicious food that I have made with my own hands. In addition, working together with my classmates to complete cooking tasks has also enhanced our friendship and fostered the spirit of teamwork. Under the guidance of the teachers, I learnt how to use kitchen equipment properly and understood the characteristics of ingredients and cooking principles. This knowledge has enabled me to be more confident in handling various cooking challenges in my daily life. In conclusion, the kitchen course has not only enriched my cooking knowledge and skills, but also given me a sense of fun and fulfilment in cooking. I believe that this experience will have a profound impact on my future life and will help me to go further in my culinary endeavours.

Melbourne's weather differs significantly from Taiwan's in several ways. One of the most striking differences is Melbourne's highly variable climate. Known for experiencing "four seasons in one day," Melbourne's weather can change rapidly, requiring residents to be prepared for any condition. Summers in Melbourne are typically warm to hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, but cool changes can bring sudden drops in temperature. In contrast, Taiwan has a more stable and humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters. Taiwan's summer temperatures are consistently high, often accompanied by heavy rainfall and occasional typhoons, which are less common in Melbourne. Another key difference is the winter experience. Melbourne's winters are relatively cold, with temperatures averaging around 10°C, and can be quite windy and wet. In contrast, Taiwan's winters are milder, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C, and are generally less rainy than the summer months. Overall, while both places have their unique weather patterns, Melbourne's unpredictability stands in stark contrast to Taiwan's more consistent and humid climate.

The cultural differences between Taiwan and Australia have a profound impact on various aspects of life, including social norms, communication styles, and daily routines. Social Norms and Values: In Taiwan, Confucian values heavily influence social interactions. Respect for elders, filial piety, and maintaining harmony within the family and community are deeply ingrained in Taiwanese culture. Social hierarchies and formalities are observed in both personal and professional settings. Addressing people by their titles and last names is common, reflecting a high level of respect and politeness. Conversely, Australian culture is more egalitarian and informal. Australians value individualism, directness, and a relaxed approach to social interactions. It's common to address people by their first names, even in professional environments. The concept of "mateship," which emphasizes loyalty and camaraderie among friends, is a cornerstone of Australian social life. Communication Styles: Communication in Taiwan tends to be indirect and context-based. People often imply meanings rather than stating them outright, and maintaining face—preserving one's dignity and that of others—is crucial. This means that feedback is usually given in a subtle manner to avoid confrontation or embarrassment. In contrast, Australians are known for their straightforward and open communication style. They appreciate honesty and clarity, and are generally comfortable with direct feedback. Humor, often self-deprecating, is a common element in conversations and helps to break the ice. Daily Routines and Lifestyle: Taiwanese daily life often revolves around family and community activities. Meals are typically shared with family, and festivals and traditions play a significant role in daily life. In Australia, there is a strong emphasis on work-life balance and outdoor activities. Australians enjoy a variety of recreational activities, such as beach outings, barbecues, and sports, which are integral to their lifestyle. Overall, while both cultures value social connections and respect, the ways in which they are expressed and experienced differ significantly.
