(一)基本資料

I’m a student in the Department of Tourism at Tamkang University. I went to International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), majoring in hospitality. At ICMS, I’m diving into the hospitality industry through courses like Hotel Management Simulation, Service and Experience Management, Food and Beverage Service, and Revenue Optimisation. These courses combine hands-on learning with essential theory, from managing hotels and optimizing guest experiences to delivering excellent food service and maximizing revenue. Along the way, I’m sharpening my cross-cultural communication skills and gaining valuable industry insights. This mix of practical training and classroom knowledge has expanded my global perspective, preparing me for challenges in the dynamic hospitality field. It’s been a great foundation for building a successful career in the international hospitality industry.(126字)

If I had to choose my favorite course, Food & Beverage Service would easily take the top spot, and I’d highly recommend it. Unlike most other courses at ICMS, this one focuses on hands-on learning rather than just theory, which was exactly what I needed since I had no prior experience in the food and beverage industry. Through this course, I learned practical skills like barista-level coffee making, how fine dining restaurants operate, and other valuable techniques that are directly useful in the hospitality industry. One of the most essential parts of the course was learning table service. We were taught how to set up A la carte tables, fold napkins properly, and follow the procedures for fine dining service. To make it even more engaging, we participated in a simulation where we acted as servers, serving meals to “guests” played by professors and other students. This gave us a real-world feel and helped us understand the nuances of customer service. The course also included amazing field trips to local bars, beer breweries, and the Fine Food Exhibition at Sydney’s International Convention Centre. These trips were incredible because some of these experiences aren’t accessible to the general public, making them truly special learning opportunities. Another highlight was learning coffee-making skills. Before this course, I’d never even touched a coffee machine, but now I can make all kinds of coffee and even simple latte art. It’s a skill that takes practice, but this course gave me the confidence and knowledge to start. Overall, Food & Beverage Service is not just a course; it’s a real-world preparation for the hospitality industry. If you want to learn practical, industry-relevant skills before stepping into the field, this course is an absolute must.(292字)

The International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) is in Manly, a cool coastal town known for its beautiful beaches and lively vibe. The campus is stunning—it’s in a castle-like building with amazing ocean views. Surrounded by green gardens, it’s peaceful and a great spot to focus on studying. The mix of history, nature, and a relaxed beachy lifestyle makes it a unique place to learn. For housing, ICMS has dorms on campus, which are super convenient if you want to stay close to your classes and campus life. Living in the dorms makes it easy to meet people and join activities. Some of my friends from Tamkang University and I decided to live off-campus in shared apartments around Manly. It gave us more freedom but kept us close to ICMS, the beach, and all the fun local spots. Manly is small and very walkable, so everything you need is close by—grocery stores, cafes, shops, and public transport. The ferry ride from Manly to Sydney’s city center is beautiful and stress-free, making it simple to explore the city. The weather here is pretty nice all year. Summers are warm, perfect for beach days, and winters are cool but never too cold. There’s always something to do outdoors, whether it’s relaxing on the beach, hiking, or chilling in the parks. Day-to-day life in Manly is super easy. There are lots of places to eat, from casual cafes to restaurants with food from around the world. Grocery shopping is simple with nearby stores. Overall, ICMS and Manly are a great combo of relaxed coastal living and access to Sydney’s city life. It’s an awesome place to study abroad and enjoy a balanced, fun experience.(290字)

One of the biggest challenges I faced studying abroad was handling the academic workload. Even though I only took four courses, each one required me to write around four major reports during the short twelve-week semester. This was very different from Taiwan, where it’s common to use online articles as references. At ICMS, every argument in our assignments had to be backed by scholarly sources, and the school had strict rules about academic integrity. Plagiarism or using AI to help write was not allowed. Each assignment took a lot of time and preparation. For example, writing a 2,000-word report usually took me at least two weeks to get done before the deadline. Luckily, ICMS offered great support for international students like me. If I needed help improving my work, I could talk to my instructor or get advice from the Student Resource Center (SRC), which was very helpful. After the semester ended, we moved into internships. This also meant finding a place to live off-campus, which was a big adjustment. One of the first things I noticed was how expensive living in Australia is compared to Taiwan, especially rent. Rent is calculated weekly here and is much higher, so paying for it myself was a significant financial challenge. Fortunately, my work schedule at the Qantas Lounge was very stable, giving me a reliable income. This made it possible to cover my living expenses and rent without worry. I even had extra money to travel to many amazing places during my time in Australia. Although these experiences were tough at first, they taught me a lot about adapting to new environments, managing my time, and budgeting effectively. Overcoming these challenges made my time abroad even more rewarding.(287字)

Studying abroad in your third year is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with challenges. To make the most of this experience, it’s essential to prepare in advance by familiarizing yourself with your school’s curriculum, living costs, and the local culture. If your courses are in English, improving your language skills beforehand will help you feel more confident. It’s also important to stay open-minded and embrace the cultural differences you’ll encounter, as this will enrich your overall experience. One of the best things I recommend is to fully embrace your time abroad and explore the local area as much as possible. At ICMS, students typically have classes two to three days a week, so you’ll have plenty of free time to explore. I highly encourage you to take leisurely walks around Manly. This not only helps you observe local life but also allows you to immerse yourself in the culture and adapt more quickly. Since you’ll be living here for a year, embrace the customs and traditions to discover a new version of yourself. Sydney's mild climate is another great advantage—while mornings and evenings can vary in temperature, the weather is comfortable year-round, with warm but non-humid summers. Sydney is a culturally diverse city with a wide range of cuisines, from Asian to Italian and Spanish, and locals are generally very friendly towards people from different nationalities, so there's little worry about severe racial discrimination. Be sure to explore the city center as well, though I recommend going out with friends rather than alone for safety. Lastly, effective self-management is key. Balancing your studies, budgeting your expenses, and taking care of your well-being will help you avoid burnout. Don’t shy away from challenges; when difficulties arise, seek support and view them as opportunities for personal growth. Embrace each experience, and your study abroad journey will be both rewarding and unforgettable.(318字)

Studying abroad in my third year gave me many valuable experiences beyond academics. Living and studying with classmates from diverse backgrounds improved my language skills and helped me understand different customs and traditions. This cultural exchange broadened my perspective and taught me how to build meaningful relationships in a multicultural environment. Living independently also played a key role in my personal growth. I was responsible for everything from grocery shopping and cooking to budgeting and time management. This made me more confident and improved my problem-solving skills, teaching me how to handle both everyday challenges and academic pressures. In addition to academics and daily life, I had the chance to travel during breaks. Exploring different cities and attractions in Australia allowed me to experience the country's natural beauty and cultural landmarks. These travels deepened my understanding of the local culture and sparked my passion for exploring new places and learning about the world.(153字)
